Wood Finishes

Our sculptures are colored first with paint or stain, when appropriate, depending on the piece. We then apply several finish coats of spar varnish, a unique formulation intended for use especially on outdoor furniture and boats.

The benefits of spar varnish are:

  • Ultra violet protection so the sun does not damage the wood
  • Resistance to mildew
  • Protection from moisture penetration
  • Flexibility as the wood expands and contracts
  • Resistance to chemicals and salt
  • Amber color that gives the wood a rich tone

Caring for Your Sculpture

Despite the high quality finish, continued protection when the sculpture is displayed outdoors depends on proper maintenance. We recommend the following:

  • To keep the sculpture clean, simply wash it with a soft cloth in clear water or mild detergent and water. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Keep your sculpture away from direct contact with the ground to protect it from moisture and insects.
  • As your sculpture ages and the wood dries further, splits and cracks may develop. These are a perfectly normal part of the aging process. In sculptures that are painted black, we recommend that you fill any cracks with rubberized roofing caulk. The caulk is black, so it blends well with the paint and makes a flexible, waterproof seal.
  • Apply a fresh coat of spar varnish every six months to all surfaces.
